Cultural Q & A

What follows is an example of a real-life success story; one where cultures crossed, where lessons were learned and where a life was forever changed.

It's an example of how (through patience and understanding) we can transcend issues related to cultural, ethnic and racial differences; issues that exist at home and abroad.

Q: Christopher, after reading A Magnificent Exchange, I came away thinking that it was really your story. How would you say your life has been impacted by living in Japan?

A: Well, as a child I didn't quite understand (or appreciate) the impact this incredible experience would have on my life. But now, I consider myself quite fortunate to have been awarded the unique opportunity to have lived and been educated in a foreign country. It was a priceless experience; one that has helped to make me the person I am today. I also thank my parents (upon returning to the states) for making that extra special effort to enroll me in Japanese school on Saturday mornings and to hire private tutors to ensure that I would retain the language skills I had acquired.

As a result of having lived in Japan, I learned a new language, forged new friendships and learned to understand, appreciate and embrace a new culture. Hopefully, these things will serve me well as I travel to other parts of the world.

I now view myself (not only as a U.S. citizen) but also as "a citizen of the world" one with an open mind and a global perspective. I am optimistic and enthusiastic about a bright and promising future that could be filled with opportunities here and abroad.

Q. Christopher, what would you say was your biggest or most profound "lesson learned" from your experience?

A. I would have to say that I learned the importance of "good manners" (which never goes out of style). And although I was just a child when I lived in Japan, I quickly learned that good manners is indeed a sensitive awareness of the feelings of others and works in any situation. This has also served me well as I have traveled abroad and interacted with individuals whose cultures, customs and beliefs differ from my own.
